Jordanian swimmers Michael Al-Wer and Serena Mehyar are preparing to compete against some of the world's best young talents at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.
The pair will represent the Kingdom in the swimming competitions at the fourth edition of the Games, which takes place from October 31-November 13.
Mehyar will be among the first Jordanian athletes in action, opening the Kingdom’s participation on November 1 in the women’s 400m freestyle.
Al-Wer will follow on November 6, competing in the men’s 200m freestyle.
Both swimmers will be looking to deliver strong performances while gaining valuable experience against leading international opposition.
National swimming team coach Mohammad Al-Radaideh believes the Games will provide an important opportunity for the athletes to develop their skills and confidence on the global stage.
“Participating in the Youth Olympic Games is an important step in Michael and Serena’s sporting careers,” he said.
“Competing against high-level international swimmers and experiencing the atmosphere of a major championship will play an important role in their technical and mental development.”
Al-Radaideh stressed that international competition is essential for the continued progress of young athletes, helping them adapt to the pressures and demands of elite-level sport.
“We want both swimmers to give their best performances and make the most of this experience,” he added.
“Competing at this level will help them build confidence, gain valuable experience and prepare for future international championships.”
The participation of Al-Wer and Mehyar forms part of Jordan’s record-breaking presence at Dakar 2026, where 13 athletes will represent the Kingdom across eight sports – the country’s most diverse participation in Youth Olympic Games history.
