Dec 02, 2023
Jordan has confirmed two athletes that will compete at the Paris 2024 OIympics after Zaid Mustafa and Saleh Al-Sharabati booked their spots in Taekwondo.
The pair did enough this weekend in Manchester at the final Grand Prix event of the year to book their places by being ranked in the top five in the world for their weights.
Mustafa won bronze in Manchester, after teammate Zaid Al-Halawani withdrew from the match for the third-place playoff. He started his journey with victories over Italy’s Denis Barita and South Korea’s Hyo Geon Jun before losing in the semi-finals to Hungarian fighter Levente Jozsa and playing off for the bronze.
Al-Halawani beat China’s Yoshiya Li Yang and Britain’s Bradley Sinden on the way to his semi-final defeat to Spain’s Javier Perez Polo. But he was unable to fight against his countryman for the bronze.
Al-Sharabati suffered a shoulder injury in his semi-final defeat against South Korea’s Jeon Woo Seid, forcing him to withdraw from his bronze medal match against USA’s CJ Nicholas. But his fourth place finish ensured enough ranking points to qualify for Paris 2024.
