Mohammad Al-Jaafari has won Karate gold on Saturday at the World Games, held in Chengdu, China.
It marks Jordan’s second medal at the Games, following teammate Abdulrahman Al-Masatfa’s Karate bronze in the men’s -67kg category.
Competing in the -84kg division, Al-Jaafari topped his group in the preliminary round with two dominant victories - 8-0 over Croatia’s Ivan Kvesic and 9-2 against the Netherlands’ Brian Timmermans - before drawing 2-2 with Greece’s Konstantinos Mastrogiannis.
In the semi-finals, Al-Jaafari defeated Japan’s Rikito Shimada, 6-1, and went on to repeat his victory over Kvesic, this time a 4-0 win in the final to secure gold.
The Karate competitions at the World Games featured the top 8 athletes worldwide in each weight category, who qualified based on their results at the last World Championships and their global rankings.
