Jordan’s teen sensation Abdullah Shelbayah has launched his campaign at the US Tennis Open Championship’s juniors competition with a two sets to one win over Ozan Cloac from the USA.
Shelbayah, ranked 34 in the world at junior level, will meet tournament seventh-seed Vyacheslav Belinsky, of Ukraine, in the second round.
Shelbayeh is also set to compete in the doubles alongside Danial Rinkon, from Spain, and will meet USA pair Jack Anthrob and Benjamin Kitay in the first round.
The Jordanian made history in July by reaching the final of the junior doubles competition at Wimbledon, picking up the runners-up medal.
Shelbayeh also became the first Jordanian player to qualify for the four grand slam tournaments, having already competed at Roland Garros and Wimbledon earlier this year.
After making a name for himself on the local level, Shelbayeh has been training at the academy belonging to Spanish star, Rafael Nadal, in Spain for the past three years, where he has become established himself as one of the best junior players on the circuit.
