It’s been an incredible journey so far, but coach, Vital Borkelmans, believes Jordan’s adventure can continue into the last eight of the AFC Asian Cup. The Belgian has masterminded the Nashama’s progress into the knock-out stages in the UAE with wins over Australia and Syria and a draw against Palestine.
And on Sunday at 1pm, the whole of Jordan will be glued to their television sets to see if they can overcome Vietnam. “It’s an exceptional opportunity for Jordan,” he said. “We have done a great job to come through the Group stage and now we have an excellent chance to reach the quarter-finals.” The experienced coach paid tribute to Vietnam who he believes have strengthened in recent years and will pose plenty of problems for his players. “They are a very fast team with very high levels of fitness. But I believe in our players’ abilities and I hope we get the job done.”
Veteran goalkeeper, Amr Shafi, has been one of the outstanding players at the tournament and said there is a strong team spirit in the camp. “We should respect Vietnam but we are confident of being able to win. We will certainly be doing all we can to make our country proud,” he said.
